BOOKS

I’m used to receiving blank or bewildered looks when I tell people I am a book designer.

Most people assume that means I do cover illustrations. Actually, I very rarely do any illustration myself. What my work entails is figuring out ways to make the cover image(s) and text work together to deliver a feeling for the subject and approach of the book. Oh, yeah, and to help the book sell.

Most people also assume that the insides of books spring up out of nowhere, and are surprised to learn that they, too, require design work. Among the decisions that need to be made are: choosing a text typeface; deciding on its size and leading; deciding on the line lengths and the width of page margins; choosing a typeface for heads; deciding on its size, prominence and placement relative to the running text; deciding on where and how to place page headers and footers; if there are illustrations or photographs, how they are going to be integrated with the text.

Interior text design is generally a more subtle, restrictive craft than designing covers and the World Wide Web is not a great medium for viewing most samples. However, I have included some sample layouts from my cookbook and photography book projects.
