PHOTOGRAPHER ELAINE BRIÈRE has been involved in the East Timor independence movement for over 30 years. East Timor: Testimony presents a small sample of her many photographs documenting the East Timorese struggle. Accompanying her photographs are nine original essays detailing the recent history of East Timor.

The challenge with art books is to provide an interesting, balanced design that never overshadows the artworks themselves. But art books also provide one of the few opportunities when publishers might actually yet you use a sans-serif text face. Here the text face I chose is Hans Eduard Meier’s elegant Syntax, paired with S.H. de Roos’ Simplex for the display face.
